There are a few reasons for there to be a hole in a coin. It may have been purposely defaced. It may have been holed to be nailed on a wall or door to try and receive protection from the God or ruler that is shown on the coin. It may be used for decoration or a souvenir.

Yes, a hole causes a coin to lose most of it’s value. The hole does reduce the numismatic value of the coin, but at the time the coin was used as money to be spent at face value it did not affect its value.

What to do with coins that have holes in them?
When I get coins that have has holes drilled in them if someone wanted to make a necklace–they are sometimes in good condition except for the hole. Do I ignore the hole and grade it normally…? To me, unless it is scarce it is useless. I’d sell it on or throw it away.
How much is a scarce date hole coin worth?
As a very rough guideline, scarce date holed coins are worth around 10% of the Wholesale Bid for that coin in Good, assuming date and mintmark, if applicable, are clear. If the coin has a lot of detail, it may make more sense to consider a (small) percentage of the wear grade in figuring value.
