Your return is considered filed on time if the envelope is properly addressed, has enough postage, is postmarked, and is deposited in the mail by the due date. If you file electronically, the date and time in your time zone when your return is transmitted controls whether your return is filed timely.
How long until something is postmarked?
As long as you drop off the letter by the last pick up time on the mailbox then it should be post marked that day. Although with the post office trying to save money by shutting down some distribution centers and sending it elsewhere to be sorted it may take another day or so to get postmarked.
Is paying on the due date late?
You must make your payment by 5 p.m. on the due date, even if that date falls on a holiday or a weekend. Otherwise, you’re technically late and can receive all the penalties of late payment, e.g., a late fee. Some credit card issuers have later payment cutoff times – like 8 p.m. or midnight.

What happens if I’m Late on my postmark?
Currently you could be liable for a late fee, but not under the new legislation. If your due date was Nov. 1, on the other hand, and your postmark was Nov. 5, you’d be legally late. But in reaction to the new postmark legislation, your lender could eliminate its current grace period for late payments and hit you with penalties you don’t face now.
